he@lthworks part 3, paint, and SOUP

By hampton, March 8, 2010 3:30 pm

so, after a week of not being able to get up to go to the gym, i got up “early” on saturday (9am) to take a 10am cardio strike class. Well, after shoving a banana with some peanut butter and a sugar free redbull down my throat, i was off. when i got to the gym, the cardio strike class had been replaced with “interval training,” due to the cs instructor having a family emergency. i was a little leery of this, but i went for it. Interval training, was not at intervals. this class was GO GO GO. so much go go go that my asthma started kicking in. also that “you’ve worked too hard, i’m going to puke” kicked in. there were 12 stations around the room set up. you had to spend 2 minutes at each station. the stations had things like hula hooping, squat thrusts, boxing a stability ball, wall sit, bosu push ups, squats, dead lifts, jump rope, plank, etc. and only 30 seconds of rest between each station.

OW. even though i think i overdid it, it was a good class. though, i have a small issue with going up and down stairs today. next week, i will return for cardio strike!

yesterday, we painted the bedrooms in J&C’s new house. we had a great time, and finished up pretty quickly. however, my roommate now needs to buy the huey lewis and the news cd collection. (yes, we were rockin’ the 80′s)

when i got home, i went grocery shopping for the week, and needed to pick up items for making french onion soup. i was using the les halles recipe. i used beef broth instead of chicken, and did not use bacon. i love bacon, but i felt it would make the soup way too rich. so, i donned swimming goggles to cut the onions up, browned the butter, caramelized the onions, added the wet works, and let it simmer for an hour. holy good god, it was delicious. it wasn’t just good. it was amazing. i couldn’t believe how much flavor was packed in there. bourdain is doing something right. i mean, i love les halles, and i love bourdain, but you never expect a recipe to come out this good, the first time. next time, i will use less butter, however. the soup was VERY rich, and between the butter and the beef broth, it was a touch too oily. but the taste, oh the taste. and one serving comes in at 6 WW points. not great, but if you bring in some french baguette, and parmesan cheese (just a touch) it will come in under 10. i don’t think that’s too bad for a dinner every once in a while.

things ‘n stuff

someone found my blog by googling “a baby in a blender.”
me thinks they were looking for or trying to figure out if jim james was really saying “a baby in a blender” in that song. and yes, yes he is.

my 2010 resolutions have NOT been going well. but i think that’s because i haven’t actually written them down on paper. so i’m going to do that, and then see how it goes.

i need a new chair for my desk. the ikea one i have is a little to hard for sitting for long periods of time when i’m doing music stuff. i just looked at how much comfy office chairs cost. i may need to sell a limb.

2009 in review.

By hampton, December 31, 2009 11:04 am

it’s not going to be that kind of review. the year was great, then it sucked worse than anything, then it was maybe 10 shades of suck, then it got better.

however, what was great for 2009 was some music. and turning 30. i think that was great. so here are my top whatevers of 2009. in no particular order.

blood bank – bon iver
vitalic – flashmob
phoenix – wolfgang amadeus phoenix
metric – fantasies
wale – attention deficit
neko case – middle cyclone
jay z – the blueprint 3
the xx – xx
fake blood – fix your accent ep

it WAS a nice morning

i was minding my own business, driving to work, listening to “stuff you should know”, and then BAM! i get rear ended. my pristine new car, is pristine no longer. outwardly, there’s only two rivet marks on my bumper form the other guy’s license plate holder, i guess. however, since it is a brand new car, i called my insurance, and now they are handling it. i guess we’ll see how this goes down. i have an appointment to go to an adjuster on monday.

ugh. at least today is pizza day in the cafe. i’m feeling mushroom and olive and jalapeno.

my shrink likes my shirt.

does that mean i should change it? it’s cute, though. gray, from anthropologie. it’s got a knot in the boob area. i like it. hmm.

my mom’s surprise dinner at WD-50 was fantastic. check out picks and mini review here, on flickr. auntie p was even able to meet us for a drink before dinner.
i’ve been a little down lately. not sleeping well, having bad dreams… i’m hoping this will change.
on the upshot, i’ve got my new running shoes for my 5k. i’m going to give them a run for their money tonight at the gym.

this weekend looks to be fun. not too much going on, but paintball on sunday. tuesday i’m going to hearthrob with athena to see laidback luke. should be exiting and fun. though i’m expecting it to be a little sad, because the UB and i went there a lot. ugh.

blood. ew.

By hampton, September 1, 2009 10:43 am

my past week and a half have been very bloody. first, i stab myself with the clam hack in the toe (through neoprene swim shoes) after kevin tells me specifically to be careful and don’t “stab yourself in the leg.” then i end up with blisters on both hands from the hack handle being too long and the sand and water rubbing against my palms. however, dinner was delicious. though, i did have a couple of tequila shots, beforehand, because i had to do “surgery” on my hands to make sure i cleaned all of the mud out of my blisters. ow.

i’ve also had some very awful awful dreams as of late. the night ted kennedy died (obv, i was sleeping at 1:30am when he died, but) i had a dream that all my teeth were falling out, and i was just spewing chunks of teeth out of my mouth every time i opened it. i usually have these dreams before someone i know dies. it’s really strange. then saturday night i had a dream that i was pregnant and was having an abortion. this one wasn’t really bloody, just disturbing. sunday night i had a dream that two of my back molars fell out, and was pretty much a repeat of last week. i wonder what my brain is trying to process?

yesterday, after work i went for a pedicure at a new-to-me nail place by work. they did a great job, except for the chunk of skin they took out of my toe. chunk is maybe not the right word, but i did bleed.
yesterday was also my “triumphant” return to the gym after my back being iffy last week. it was awesome. elliptical = 0, d = 1. i can’t go today, because of a team meeting at lunch, but will go tomorrow with my gym buddy, xtina. i have also run out of calcium bears. i have to go to trader joes to get more.

i am looking forward to this weekend. it’s campfire and there are a lot of great musicians to go and see. apparently there are some surprise special guests as well. i’m not working it at all this year. i’m purely a spectator. it’ll be great to just sit and watch. the roommate and i are also going to see inglorious basterds. i will also most likely end up playing with charlie. also, i will prob. have a date with a new guy. let’s call him Mr. OKC. we shall see.

i saw (500) days of summer over the weekend.

i am joseph gordon-levitt’s character. totally. it’s insane. but i’ve also been zooey deschenel’s character too… but not really.

rain rain go away

By hampton, June 24, 2009 1:36 pm

this is ridiculous. this rain needs to stop. it’s going to stop, and then we’re going to steam because everything is wet. what happened to spring, i ask? maybe i should put my a/c in the window this weekend.

tomorrow i am going to “beautiful” new jersey. client visit. we are flying out of BOS at 6am. (seriously, amateur colleagues picked this flight.) we get there at 7:30. our meeting does not start until 10. 10!!! wtf. our meeting ends at 3, and we don’t leave EWR till 6:30. please make it stop.

on the upshot, the weekend looks like it’s shaping up to be good… hopefully.

everybody’s working for the weekend

By hampton, June 18, 2009 10:41 am

i am super excited for the weekend. i’m not doing anything all that special, but i think it will be a good weekend. i plan to go out with K tomorrow night, if he doesn’t cancel on me again. i think we’re going candlepin bowling at sacco’s. i really almost despise candlepin bowling, but whatever.

saturday is going to be a day of wonders! i’m going to get up early, clean/vacuum and wash my car. then i’m going to head over to the union square farmer’s market to see what delicious items i can find. my acupuncturist told me that they also have a knife-sharpening man.  I will bring some knives to get sharp! i also need to hit up the library as i finished my book last week. it is overdue as usual, so i need to pay them too! i’m such a bad library citizen.

step and nikki come home from colorado on saturday, too. i can’t wait to hear about their trip!
